Wind & Sky Apiaries began as ABC Honey in Greenfield, Ohio, in 2019. ABC Honey's founder, Travis Snyder, never dreamed of the success the company would have over the next five years. As a high school teacher at Greenfield McClain High School, Travis enjoyed talking about his passion for bees with his students. It didn’t take long for him to realize that his students had just as many questions about bees as he did.
As the company grew, Travis looked for ways to give back to his community. His first opportunity to do this was by supporting local Future Farmers of America in their annual fundraising efforts. As a teacher, coach, and now businessman, Travis approached most situations with the motto, “Give it a shot and see what happens.” And that’s just what he did when the opportunity to place hives on Big Plain Solar Field in London, Ohio, presented itself. Working hand in hand with Leeward Renewable Energies, ABC Honey soon realized that renewable energy sites provided bees with an excellent habitat to thrive, grow strong, and produce a lot of honey.
By the summer of 2022, ABC Honey had grown to over 50 hives, with plans to expand to around 300. Taking a new job at Indian Hill High School, a top-tier high school in the state of Ohio, Travis knew that he simply could not give up ABC Honey. The company had grown beyond anything Travis had expected, and there were many new developments in the works. Along with new solar fields, Heroes and Hives, a nonprofit organization for veterans and first responders, was beginning to take shape. With the support of Leeward Renewable Energies, Travis began to lay the groundwork for a program that would bring beekeeping to veterans and first responders on a statewide level.
By the summer of 2024, Travis had lined up over 10 solar fields to place bees on, with more in the works as they moved from development to construction. Heroes and Hives was set to start the following spring, and the company continued to take on a life of its own. During an interview with Leeward’s public relations officer, Kevin Thornton, the idea of becoming a consultant at a national level was jokingly thrown out. The following day, on his way to work, Travis thought to himself, “Might as well give it a shot,” and went forward with laying out what a national approach to beekeeping would look like. Leaning on fellow educator Ben Van, Travis set up a meeting with Leeward to gauge their interest in taking beekeeping nationwide. Being a company that focuses on allowing its employees and contractors the ability to follow their passions, Leeward Renewable Energy’s Tiffany Buck was wildly supportive of the idea.
During his time at Indian Hill, Travis struck up a friendship with Charles “Chip” Miller, an Indian Hill local who quickly took an interest in this nationwide approach to beekeeping. It didn’t take long for Travis and Chip to make their partnership official, and the new business venture, Wind and Sky Apiaries began. Wind and Sky Apiaries, which did not replace ABC Honey (which still exists but focuses solely on producing honey), aims to bring bees to renewable energy and other industry sites to spread and strengthen the industry of beekeeping, with the hope of impacting the legacy of the North American honey bee. Knowing that honey bees not only benefit from the environment they live in but also strengthen that environment by giving back valuable resources, Wind and Sky Apiaries took the approach of benefiting from the pollinator fields that many companies were starting to put in, while providing ample benefits back to the companies they partner with.
